Recent developments in Wifi networking might have been overshadowed a bit by the excitement around increasing adoption of 5G Mobile network and the new use cases it enables.
However at Quorus we believe that Wifi is there to stay for a number of reasons:
- Globally 80% of indoor wiresless connectivity is provided through Wifi solutions
- The latest generations of Wifi (6,6E,7) made big steps forward towards carrier-grade connectivity, with more bandwidth, higher resiliency and better scheduling mechanisms
- Some vendors do not develop Mobile Network interfaces and choose a pure Wifi approach
- 5G high frequencies do not penetrate very far indoors
- Wifi used for Data/Voice offload in areas of poor coverage
Therefore it seems like a better approach to consider 5G and Wifi complementary technologies which both have their place under the sun.
For standard indoor connectivity Wifi will probably remain the dominant technology for years to come, while for outdoor connectivity 5G offers capabilities that Wifi simply cannot match.
At Quorus we believe that a good assessment of where to use Wifi and where 5G is what will allow the customer to make the right choices that will optimally benefit their business.
